Description

The First Five program works with children under the age of five.

Project Overview

The goal of the study is to determine whether phone call counseling will increase the rate of parents/guardians bringing their child, aged 0-5, to their next scheduled dental appointment in the First Five Program of the Pediatric Dental Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

Outcome

Early results demonstrate that parents/caregivers are bringing the children to their scheduled appointments, and if they are unable to, they inform us and call the school to reschedule. Out of the seven patients’ parents/caregivers we have participated in phone call counseling with thus far, five arrived, and two called to reschedule. We are in the process of calling more patients’ caregivers and parents, and are keeping track via a BOX file with chart numbers, without patient identifiers. Therefore, the project can continue into the next academic year, with our calls serving as the experimental group.
