Description

At the Pediatric First Five Clinic, third and fourth year dental students work with faculties to provide preventive oral health care to children birth to age five. Treatments provided include oral health education, dental examination, caries risk assessment, and caries management plan.

Project Overview

At Penn Dental Medicine, third year dental students come into their First Five Clinic rotation with inadequate skills and training in silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application. Our goal is to improve the quality of educational experiences of students in the First Five Program and optimize rotation time to improve patient care.

Outcome

The pre-intervention survey responses indicated the need for additional training in SDF application. After the intervention, there was an improvement in the students’ preparedness in applying SDF and communication of the procedures with caregivers. All questions on beliefs toward preventive oral health care to children birth to age five showed a more agreeable response following the intervention. Thus, the results suggest an improvement of dental students’ experience and education in First Five rotation, leading to positively changing the knowledge, skills, and beliefs of dental students.
