Project Overview

In the Vulnerable Populations clinic, we see patients from all walks of life, specifically those with past traumatic experiences. Due to lack of access to care or other social determinants of health, these patients often have compromised oral health. One particular patient presented to our clinic with several fractured non-restorable teeth, gross caries, and periodontal disease. Her past experiences included physical, verbal, and sexual abuse which led to emotional trauma. These events affected her self-confidence and contributed to her unstable oral health. Our goal was to stop disease progression and restore her remaining dentition while simultaneously ensuring that she felt safe and cared for as we navigated her complex dental care.

Outcome

With this case, we were able to perform higher level full mouth rehabilitation to get her to stable oral health. Along with this, this patient exhibited improvements in oral hygiene, self-care, self-confidence, and emotional stability.
