Description

Healthy NewsWorks is a non-profit health media site dedicated to empowering elementary and middle school students to become writers, researchers, and critical thinkers. The mission of Healthy NewsWorks is to advance health education and literacy through factual publications and digital media. Since Fall 2018, Marian, the Executive Director, has overseen the program in 32 schools in the Philadelphia and Norristown school districts that have published more than 450 newspaper editions.

Project Overview

In response to the recent global pandemic outbreak, the Student Interns created a PowerPoint Presentation, infographic, and Kahoot! game dedicated to cardiovascular diseases and COVID-19. These interactive activities were presented during virtual camp sessions to elementary and middle school students, in hopes of enriching their health and medical knowledge.

Outcome

Student interns presented to elementary and middle school students about the importance of cardiovascular health, especially during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course, interns also amassed a resources list for talking about race and racism with children, health and nutrition, COVID-19 prevention, vaccines, and antibodies.
